A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a special type of bank account that

  1. requires you to initially deposit a big sum that will cover your spending for half or a whole year.
  2. then allows you to withdraw every month a part of it (1/6 or 1/12).

That way, you prove that you have enough funds to sustain yourself while living and studying in Germany.

You need a blocked account if you apply

  • for a study visa
  • for a residence permit as a student (if you come from a country that allows you to enter Germany without a visa)
  • for a jobseeker visa

Offers

You can open a blocked account online. Some services also offer packages together with health insurance and a regular bank account.
