With a prepaid SIM card, you need to pay you provider advance, by topping up your balance on your phone.

The advantage: you never pay an unexpected high price – if the balance is empty, you simply cannot make more calls or use up data.

The following overview is in German but this dictionary might help you:

* ''Gesprächsminuten'' = inclusive minutes (to use up for phone calls within Germany)

* ''Datenvolumen'' = including data

* ''Rufnummernmitnahme'' = if you already have a German mobile number at another provider and want to transfer it to your new SIM card, check yes (''ja'')

* ''Netzanbieter'' = which main network operators to include.

** see a [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_network_operators_of_Europe#Germany technical overview at Wikipedia], incl. network types and frequencies.
